starting off
I spent a good deal of hands on research.. I went to as many museums and exhibitions that I was capable of:
1) Moma (twice)
2) Newmuseum East Village Exhibition at Chelsea Museum
3)various other small galleries in the Chelsea area
4)International Center of Photography
5) Whitney - particularly Bill Viola's 5 angels piece
I was particularly interested in how sound was positioned for maximum effect. For example, at the Whitney, Bill Viola's piece had 5 screens with 5 separate sound design. Depending on where you were positioned, you would get a different emphasis. Obviously the strongest sound would be from the particular screen you were standing closest to, but it was interesting to see how the sounds were the triggers to indicate that something was happening on a particular screen.
I intend to focus on the topic of user feedback in sound installations first. Hitting the library, internet research, and seeing more works. I plan on seeing Cory Arcangel's work at the Chelsea hopefully this week.
