light bead installation
done by itp-alums ahmi wolf and jin yo molf
abstract taken from their website:The Light Bead Curtain is the fourth object in The Music Box Project. It is an interactive musical installation that can be freely played by person's touch. The installation takes the form of a beaded curtain, consisting of strings of simple clear beads. Each bead, on a users touch, lights itself and emits a unique sound. People play with the curtain by weaving their hands through it, touching it with their faces, and moving through it with their body.

a laptop maxmsp concept that has improvisation in mind..
user makes sounds based on four modules (from the website):
one must choose to create a sound – rhythm, pitches, timbre, and envelope. The combination of the particular modules chosen causes different sounds. The rhythm module sends rhythms to the pitches module. The pitches module assigns pitches to each rhythm and sends them to the timbre module. The timbre module generates a tone at that pitch and using the specified timbre, and sends that to the envelope module. The envelope module then shapes the note's volume in time and sends the audio to the effects chain. The audio is then put through whatever series of effects are desired, in whatever order is desired, and then the sound is finally sent out to the listener.
still experimenting with the modules, but i find the compartmentalization of sound into the four modules may be something i would like to integrate into my thesis project...

While it's focused on developing an interactive dance club, there are some really interesting points regarding avoiding chaos when there are many users..

starting off
I spent a good deal of hands on research.. I went to as many museums and exhibitions that I was capable of:
1) Moma (twice)
2) Newmuseum East Village Exhibition at Chelsea Museum
3)various other small galleries in the Chelsea area
4)International Center of Photography
5) Whitney - particularly Bill Viola's 5 angels piece
I was particularly interested in how sound was positioned for maximum effect. For example, at the Whitney, Bill Viola's piece had 5 screens with 5 separate sound design. Depending on where you were positioned, you would get a different emphasis. Obviously the strongest sound would be from the particular screen you were standing closest to, but it was interesting to see how the sounds were the triggers to indicate that something was happening on a particular screen.
I intend to focus on the topic of user feedback in sound installations first. Hitting the library, internet research, and seeing more works. I plan on seeing Cory Arcangel's work at the Chelsea hopefully this week.

30 sec elevator pitch Take 1
I aim to overcome the cacophonous nature of interactive collaborative musical physical installations. Group effects and dynamics as a whole can be quite complex, and when coupled with a technology based environment where users are interacting together to create music or sounds, the results are all too often disastrous or downright noisy and annoying. The heart of the problem lies in solving issues with user feedback and interface design. Users need to understand how and what they are contributing to a musical installation in order for them to have a more rewarding and engaging interaction.
